The Columbia Foot &
Ankle Service is specialized to handle the myriad problems that
can affect adults. The human foot is quite different than any other
in the animal kingdom. It possesses enough flexibility to accommodate
uneven terrain, yet at the same time has the stability to maintain
the longitudinal arch and support prolonged bipedal gait. Specialized
bones, joints, and muscles work together to achieve this unique
combination of stability and flexibility.
Problems can arise in any of these
specialized structures. Our approach at Columbia Orthopedics is
to view problems in one structure in the larger context of the entire
foot and ankle. A disorder in one part of the foot affects the others,
so no foot problem can be viewed in isolation.
The Foot & Ankle Service is skilled in the use of the latest
medications, braces, and orthotics to provide a safe and speedy
recovery. If surgery is necessary, we have extensive experience
with procedures ranging from bunion surgery to the most complex
reconstructions, including limb realignment, diabetic reconstruction,
and primary and revision total ankle replacement.
