Emmi patient education programs provide an engaging, innovative way for patients to learn about the surgical procedures they will undergo.
Research shows that during consultations with their physicians, most patients retain only 20% of the information they hear.
Because patients can view an Emmi program's lessons multiple times and share them with caregivers, they are much more likely to retain the information.
The Department of Surgery offers its patients Emmi programs for dozens of procedures including gastric bypass surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, plastic surgery, and others.
Each program includes an anatomy lesson, a description of the condition/disease, and a step-by-step explanation of the surgical procedure.
It includes pre-operative instructions, recovery information, information about risks and benefits, and information about any alternative therapies.
Animated illustrations are enhanced with verbal explanation, as well as written cues.
While going through each lesson, you can advance at your own speed.
If you have questions along the way, you can store them in the Emmi notepad function and print them to bring to your physician for discussion at your next office visit.
Emmi supplements the extensive education provided by our physicians, giving patients the opportunity to access the information at their convenience, and on multiple occasions if desired. Our patients have confirmed this.
Of the Columbia patients surveyed so far, 90% said they would share the program with family and friends.
"I think this was a great way to learn about the procedure," says one patient. "Emmi programs are easy to follow, and stop to answer important questions," says another.
